Salutation to Śrī Gaṇeśa. Indra said:

Note

Both printings of the Bṛhat Stotra Ratnākara open with the salutation to Gaṇeśa and ‘Indra said’; the Gita Press prints only ‘Indra said’.

namaste'stu mahamaye shripithe surapujite |
shankhachakragadahaste mahalakshmi namo'stu te || 1 ||

Salutation to you, O Mahāmāyā, [seated] on the glorious seat, worshipped by the gods. O you with conch, discus and mace in your hands, O Mahālakṣmī, salutation to you.

Word by word (English) & note

O Mahālakṣmī

The refrain महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तु ते closes all eight verses; the Bṛhat Stotra Ratnākara prints it in full in verse 1 and shortens it after, and the Gita Press prints it in full each time. Conch, discus and mace are Viṣṇu’s emblems, held here by his consort. श्रीपीठे is explained by the Gita Press as ‘seated on the Śrīpīṭha’; a pīṭha is a seat, and also a seat of the Goddess, a shrine.

namaste garudarudhe kolasurabhayankari |

O goddess

Garuḍa, the great eagle, is Viṣṇu’s mount. The stotra says nothing more of the demon Kola. Kolhapur’s legend tells of a demon Kolhāsura slain there by Mahālakṣmī, after whom the city is said to be named, and the line is often heard as being about him; the printings do not say so.

sarvajne sarvavarade sarvadushtabhayankari |

Both printings of the Bṛhat Stotra Ratnākara read मन्त्रमूर्ते, ‘embodiment of mantra’, as do both Wikisource copies; the Gita Press reads मन्त्रपूते, ‘made pure by mantra’. Bhukti is enjoyment of the world; mukti, release from it.

All three printings read योगजे. Many copies on the web, and the second Wikisource copy, read योगज्ञे, ‘knower of yoga’; no printing seen has it. The Gita Press prints आद्यशक्तिमहेश्वरि as one word, as here; the Bṛhat Stotra Ratnākara spaces it, आद्यशक्ति महेश्वरि, which is said the same.

Gross and subtle: she is both the visible world and what lies beneath it. महोदरा, ‘great of belly’, is explained as holding all the worlds within her. The Gita Press prints महाशक्तिमहोदरे as one word, as here; the Bṛhat Stotra Ratnākara spaces it.

Provenance

Traditional attribution

Attributed to Indra, in the printings

Undated

All three printings head the stotra ‘Indra said’ and close it as made by Indra, king of the gods. None says more, or names an older source. Copies on the web often say it comes from the Padma Purāṇa, without naming a chapter. It was not found in the parts of that Purāṇa searched: the Uttarakhaṇḍa, in the Ānandāśrama edition (1894) and in the Veṅkaṭeśvara text as reprinted in Delhi (1984) with its index of half-verses, and the Bhūmi, Svarga, Brahma and Pātāla khaṇḍas of that reprint. Those searches ran on the scans’ machine-read text, which can miss a line, and the Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa was not searched, so the Padma Purāṇa attribution is unverified rather than disproved. Who composed the stotra, and when, is not known.

Context
Indra’s praise of Mahālakṣmī. In eight verses, each ending ‘O Mahālakṣmī, salutation to you’, he greets her both as Viṣṇu’s consort, riding Garuḍa and holding his conch, discus and mace, and as the supreme Goddess: without beginning or end, the primal power, the supreme Brahman, mother of the world. Three verses of reward (phalaśruti) follow, for reciting it once, twice or three times a day. Many Maharashtrian homes say it at Lakṣmī pūjā on Dīvāḷī night. It is printed in the Bṛhat Stotra Ratnākara, in the Khemraj printing (1906) and in the Nirṇaya Sāgar printing (1932) as no. 75, and in the Gita Press Stotra Ratnāvalī as no. 24; the three agree but for the few words given in the notes. All three give it to Indra and none names an older source. It is often said to come from the Padma Purāṇa; that has not been verified (see the author note).
Recited
  • Lakṣmī pūjā on the new-moon night of Dīvāḷī
  • Worship of Lakṣmī on Fridays
