Salutation to Śrī Gaṇeśa. Of this mantra, the Śanaiśchara Stotra: the seer is Daśaratha; the deity, Śanaiśchara; the metre, triṣṭubh. It is recited for the pleasure of Śanaiśchara. Daśaratha said:

Note

The Nirṇaya Sāgar printing reads अस्य श्रीशनैश्चरस्तोत्रस्य, ‘of this Śanaiśchara Stotra’, without ‘mantra’; the Khemraj printing’s reading is given here. Triṣṭubh is the class of metre with eleven syllables to the line, to which verses 1 to 9 belong; verses 10 and 11 are anuṣṭubh, of eight.

The ten names in this verse are the ten of Pippalāda’s verse (verse 10), with Koṇa for Koṇastha and Śani for Śanaiśchara. Sauri, ‘son of Sūrya’, and the refrain’s Ravinandana, ‘joy of Ravi’, both call Śani the son of the Sun; nandana, ‘one who gladdens’, is a common word for a son.

Kimpuruṣas, Gandharvas and Vidyādharas are semi-divine beings; uragas and pannagas are serpents, the nāgas. विषमस्थित, ‘standing unevenly’, is Śani in an unfavourable place, in the sky or in a horoscope. पीड्यन्ति, ‘are afflicted’, a passive with an active ending, is as both printings read it, here and in verses 3 and 4.

Svayambhū, ‘self-born’, is Brahmā; Hari is Viṣṇu; Pinākī, ‘bearer of the bow Pināka’, is Śiva. With the refrain, the verse makes Śani the one who is all three, and whose form is the three Vedas. The Khemraj printing reads एक त्रिधा, without the sandhi of एकः; the Nirṇaya Sāgar printing’s एकस्त्रिधा is given here. The copy on Sanskrit Wikisource reads

Whoever, pure, recites the Śanyaṣṭaka at dawn every day, with good sons, cattle and kin, gains happiness on earth, rich in enjoyments, and at its end the state of nirvāṇa.

Śanyaṣṭaka, ‘the eight on Śani’, names verses 1 to 8. The sons, cattle and kin may go with the reciting or with the happiness it brings; the words allow both. The Khemraj printing reads सपुत्रैः, ‘with [his] sons’, for सुपुत्रैः, and पठेच्च for पठेत्तु, with the same sense; here the Nirṇaya Sāgar printing is followed. The copy on Sanskrit Wikisource ends पठेच्च सौख्यं भुवि भोगयुक्तं प्राप्नोति निर्वाणपदं परं सः, ‘he [gains] happiness rich in enjoyments on earth, and the highest state of nirvāṇa’.

The viniyoga names Daśaratha as the stotra’s seer (ṛṣi), and both printings head the first verse ‘Daśaratha said’; the Khemraj printing also closes it as ‘spoken by Daśaratha’. Neither says more about him. The ten names of verse 10 are given as Pippalāda’s praise. When the stotra was composed is not known.

Context
One of two Sanskrit stotras called the Śani Stotra, both given to Daśaratha. The other, his praise in the Padma Purāṇa (नमः कृष्णाय नीलाय), is in this library as the Śani Stotra. Both printings title this one Śani Stotra; its viniyoga and colophon call it the Śanaiśchara Stotra, the name used here. Eight verses, each ending ‘to him, the glorious son of the Sun, salutation’, tell how gods, people, animals and whole lands suffer when Śani is ill-placed, name the gifts that please him, and praise him as creator, protector and destroyer in one. A ninth calls the eight a Śanyaṣṭaka and gives their reward. Pippalāda’s verse of Śani’s ten names follows, the same ten that open the stotra, and a last verse promises that whoever says them on rising will not suffer from Śani. It is printed in the Bṛhat Stotra Ratnākara: in the Khemraj printing (1906) straight after Vyāsa’s Navagraha Stotra, and in the Nirṇaya Sāgar printing (1932) as no. 173. Neither printing names an older source. Some copies on the web give it to the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa; no edition of that Purāṇa has been checked for it.
