I will fall prostrate before you and bow at your feet; with my eyes I will behold your form. I will embrace you with love, worship you with joy, and wave the lamp before you with devotion — says Nāmā.

tvameva mātā cha pitā tvameva | tvameva bandhuścha sakhā tvameva |
tvameva vidyā draviṇaṃ tvameva | tvameva sarvaṃ mama devadeva || 2 ||

You alone are my mother, and you my father; you alone my kin, and you my friend. You alone are my learning, you my wealth — you alone are my everything, O God of gods.

Note

Traced to the Pāṇḍava Gītā; now sung at the close of worship across India.

kāyena vāchā manasendriyairvā | buddhyātmanā vā prakṛtisvabhāvāt |
karomi yadyatsakalaṃ parasmai | nārāyaṇāyeti samarpayāmi || 3 ||

Whatever I do — by body, speech or mind, by the senses, by intellect or self, or by the force of my own nature — all of it I offer to the Supreme, to Nārāyaṇa.

Note

Adapted from the Bhāgavata Purāṇa (11.2.36), where the second line reads ‘anusṛta-svabhāvāt’ — ‘following one’s nature’.

achyutaṃ keśavaṃ rāmanārāyaṇaṃ | kṛṣṇadāmodaraṃ vāsudevaṃ harim |
śrīdharaṃ mādhavaṃ gopikāvallabhaṃ | jānakīnāyakaṃ rāmachandraṃ bhaje || 4 ||

I worship Acyuta, Keśava, Rāma, Nārāyaṇa; Kṛṣṇa, Dāmodara, Vāsudeva, Hari; Śrīdhara, Mādhava, beloved of the gopīs; the lord of Jānakī, Rāmachandra.

Note

The opening verse of the Achyutāṣṭakam, traditionally ascribed to Ādi Śaṅkarāchārya.

hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare |
hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare || 5 ||

The great mantra of the names — a calling-out to Hari, to Rāma, to Kṛṣṇa, repeated sixteen times.

Note

From the Kali-santaraṇa Upaniṣad, which gives the Rāma line first — the order sung in Maharashtra.

Sant Nāmdev, and tradition

13th–14th century onward

Nāmdev (c. 1270–1350), a tailor by trade and one of the great saint-poets of the Vārkarī tradition, was a contemporary of Dnyāneshwar and a lifelong devotee of Viṭṭhala at Paṇḍharpūr. His abhaṅgas travelled as far as the Punjab, and some are preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib. The first verse here bears his signature, ‘mhaṇe nāmā’; the Sanskrit verses that follow were gathered from older sources over time into the form every Maharashtrian household now sings.

Context
Every āratī in Maharashtra ends the same way. Having sung to Gaṇeśa, Devī or Viṭṭhala, the household bows and sings these five verses — one in Marathi, then four in Sanskrit — moving from Nāmdev’s intimate image of falling at the Lord’s feet, through the surrender of every action, to the chanting of the names. Because it closes every āratī whatever the deity, it may be the most often-sung text in the state.
