Dweller in Karavīra, mother of the great gods and sages, giver of boons to Śiva who destroyed the three cities, beloved wife of Viṣṇu who slew Mura: from your womb, in the form of a lotus, you brought forth Brahmā the creator. Even Śeṣa, who bears the earth, cannot finish singing your virtues with his thousand mouths.

The citron, the mace and the shield shine like rays of the sun; the golden bowl of nectar gleams in your hand. With your girdle of rubies, your robe of lovely colour, your doe’s eyes and your face like moonlight, you are the radiant mother of Madana, the god of love.

Citron, mace, shield and drinking bowl are what the image of Mahālakṣmī in the Kolhapur temple holds in her four hands.

You are Tārā, the power beyond reach; to the worshippers of Śiva you are Gaurī. The Sāṅkhyas call you Prakṛti; others hold you to be beyond all qualities. You are Gāyatrī, your own seed, the essence of the Vedas and the Āgamas; to those who keep their own dharma you appear as Padmāvatī.

O river brimming with nectar, ward off sin and wrongdoing; slay the fearsome demons; carry us across the sea of worldly life, so hard to cross. Draw back the veil of illusion from the family of those who bow to you, and show them beyond doubt that this form is consciousness itself, is That.

Whatever lines of wretched karma the four-faced Brahmā may have written on my forehead, O Mother, wipe them out beneath your feet, wash them away with the flowers of your feet, gracious daughter of the Ocean of Milk: so prays Mukteshwar.

Brahmā is said to write each person’s fate on the forehead at birth. Webdunia’s text and the pages copied from it read कुश्चित, which is not a Marathi word; other printings read कुत्सित, ‘wretched’. Mukteshwar signs the āratī in its last line; नागर, ‘gracious’, may describe the poet rather than the Goddess.

Translations stay close to the words; words we supply are in [brackets]. Where a line is read in more than one way, the note beside it says so. How we edit → Found an error in this text? Tell us.

The last line carries the name Mukteshwar, in the place where a Marathi āratī’s poet signs. The best-known Marathi poet of that name is the seventeenth-century Mukteshwar, remembered as Eknāth’s grandson, who retold parts of the Mahābhārata in Marathi; we have found no source that says this āratī is his.

Context
The āratī of Mahālakṣmī of Karavīra, the Goddess of Kolhapur, sung in Maharashtrian homes at Lakṣmī pūjā on Dīvāḷī night and through the year. Its five stanzas picture her as her image stands in the Kolhapur temple, name her as each school of thought names her, and end with a plea to wipe out the fate Brahmā wrote on the singer’s forehead. The refrain hails her as dwelling in everything, gross and subtle.
