Samarth Rāmdās

1608–1682 CE

Born Nārāyaṇ Ṭhosar at Jāmb, Rāmdās left home as a boy, spent twelve years in austerity at Ṭākaḷī on the Godāvarī, then twelve years travelling across India. Returning to Maharashtra he founded monasteries and Māruti temples, wrote the Dāsbodh and the Manāche Ślok, and composed several of the state’s best-loved āratīs. His teaching joined devotion to Rāma with vigorous, practical ethics. He spent his last years at Sajjangaḍ, near Sātārā.

Context
Rāmdās saw in Māruti the ideal he wanted Maharashtra to live by — immense strength joined to perfect devotion and self-mastery. In fifteen verses he paints Māruti’s cosmic form: a leap that crosses the heavens, a tail that could circle the universe, eyes that flash like fire. The two closing verses seal the stotra with its fruits. It is among the first stotras Marathi children learn, and is chanted in the Māruti temples that stand at the edge of nearly every Maharashtrian village.
