Durdhara and Durmukha are two demons of Mahiṣa's army, killed together in the third chapter of the Devī Māhātmya, and the line is read with their names. Taken as ordinary words it would mean ‘who overpowers the irresistible, who bears with the foul-mouthed’; marṣiṇi literally means ‘who endures’. Daughter of the ocean names her as Lakṣmī, born from the churning of the sea. The Dānavas and the sons of Diti are the demons.

O you who bear the irresistible power of the immortals, risen to slay enemies made reckless by battle; who made the lord of the Pramathas, the great Śiva, foremost in shrewd counsel, your messenger; who resolved on death for the envoy of the Dānavas, wicked, ill-intentioned, evil-hearted and evil-minded: victory, victory to you, slayer of Mahiṣāsura, with your lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

Three episodes of the Devī Māhātmya: she burns Dhūmralochana to ashes with the sound ‘huṃ’ (chapter 6); every drop of the blood of Raktabīja, here called Śoṇitabīja, becomes another demon until it is drunk before it falls (chapter 8); and the war with Śumbha and Niśumbha (chapters 9 and 10). Śiva, Śiva is a cry of awe.

A yamaka verse: the same syllables repeat with shifting senses (sumanas: flower, god, kind heart; rajanī: night; bhramara: bee, whirling). No translation keeps the play, so this gives the plainest sense. Bhrāmarī, queen of bees, is a form of the Goddess foretold in the eleventh chapter of the Devī Māhātmya.

परंपराProvenance

Traditional attribution

आद्य शंकराचार्य (परंपरेनुसार)

Attributed to Ādi Śaṅkarāchārya

Undated; if Śaṅkara’s, 8th century

Popular tradition credits the hymn to Ādi Śaṅkara, the teacher of Advaita Vedānta, but the attribution has not been confirmed. Some sources instead name a poet called Rāmakṛṣṇa Kavi and place these verses within a longer Bhagavatī Padya Puṣpāñjali. We have found no scholarly edition that settles the question.

Context
Twenty-one verses to Durgā as Mahiṣāsuramardinī, slayer of Mahiṣa, the buffalo demon whose defeat is told in the Devī Māhātmya. Verse after verse piles up epithets, many of them built from the syllables of drum and dance, and every one closes on the same refrain. That driving rhythm has made it one of the most sung hymns of Navrātri. The twenty-one verses chanted in homes are part of a longer sequence: sanskritdocuments.org numbers them 7 to 27 of thirty.
