I bow to Viṣṇu — of peaceful form, reclining on the serpent, the lotus at his navel, lord of the gods; the support of the universe, vast as the sky, the colour of clouds, of auspicious form; beloved of Lakṣmī, lotus-eyed, reached by yogis in meditation; remover of the fear of worldly existence, the one lord of all the worlds.

Two images are held together on purpose: the god asleep on the cosmic ocean, perfectly at peace, and the god who removes our fear. Contemplating his calm is itself the remedy.

An anonymous meditation verse, used as the dhyāna — the inner visualisation — before Viṣṇu’s worship. Its long mandākrāntā metre, ‘the slow-stepping’, gives it an unhurried, stately pace that suits its subject.

Context
A complete portrait in four lines: Viṣṇu at rest on the serpent Śeṣa, the lotus rising from his navel, the colour of rain clouds, vast as the sky — and at the same time the one who dispels the fear of existence. It is sung at dusk in many Maharashtrian homes and often opens the recitation of the Viṣṇu Sahasranāma.
