sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ sahasrapāt |
sa bhūmiṃ viśvato vṛtvātyatiṣṭhaddaśāṅgulam || 1 ||

The Person has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. Pervading the earth on every side, he extends ten fingers’ breadth beyond it.

puruṣa evedaṃ sarvaṃ yadbhūtaṃ yachcha bhavyam |
utāmṛtatvasyeśāno yadannenātirohati || 2 ||

The Person alone is all this — what has been and what is yet to be. He is lord of immortality, since through food he grows beyond [his own state].

Note

The second line is read in more than one way. This rendering follows Sāyaṇa’s commentary; others translate ‘lord of immortality, and of whatever grows by food’.

etāvānasya mahimāto jyāyā̃ścha pūruṣaḥ |
pādo'sya viśvā bhūtāni tripādasyāmṛtaṃ divi || 3 ||

Such is his greatness, and the Person is greater still. All beings are one quarter of him; three quarters are the immortal in heaven.

tripādūrdhva udaitpuruṣaḥ pādo'syehābhavatpunaḥ |
tato viṣvaṅvyakrāmatsāśanānaśane abhi || 4 ||

With three quarters the Person rose on high; one quarter came into being here again. From there he strode out in every direction, over what eats and what does not.

tasmādvirāḷajāyata virājo adhi pūruṣaḥ |
sa jāto atyarichyata paśchādbhūmimatho puraḥ || 5 ||

From him Virāj was born, and from Virāj the Person. Once born, he reached beyond the earth, behind it and before it.

Note

Virāj, ‘the widely shining’, is a creative principle; the Person and Virāj give birth to one another. The last words are also read temporally — Sāyaṇa: ‘afterwards [he made] the earth, and then bodies’.

yatpuruṣeṇa haviṣā devā yajñamatanvata |
vasanto asyāsīdājyaṃ grīṣma idhmaḥ śaraddhaviḥ || 6 ||

When the gods spread out the sacrifice with the Person as the offering, spring was its clarified butter, summer its firewood, autumn its oblation.

taṃ yajñaṃ barhiṣi praukṣanpuruṣaṃ jātamagrataḥ |
tena devā ayajanta sādhyā ṛṣayaścha ye || 7 ||

They consecrated on the sacred grass that sacrifice — the Person, born in the beginning. With him the gods performed the rite, and the Sādhyas, and the seers.

tasmādyajñātsarvahutaḥ sambhṛtaṃ pṛṣadājyam |
paśūntā̃śchakre vāyavyānāraṇyāngrāmyāścha ye || 8 ||

From that sacrifice, offered whole, the curdled butter was gathered. He made the creatures of the air, of the forest and of the village.

tasmādyajñātsarvahuta ṛchaḥ sāmāni jajñire |
chhandāṃsi jajñire tasmādyajustasmādajāyata || 9 ||

From that sacrifice, offered whole, the verses and the chants were born; the metres were born from it, and from it the sacrificial formulas.

tasmādaśvā ajāyanta ye ke chobhayādataḥ |
gāvo ha jajñire tasmāttasmājjātā ajāvayaḥ || 10 ||

From it horses were born, and all animals with teeth in both jaws; from it cattle were born, and from it goats and sheep.

yatpuruṣaṃ vyadadhuḥ katidhā vyakalpayan |
mukhaṃ kimasya kau bāhū kā ūrū pādā uchyete || 11 ||

When they divided the Person, into how many parts did they arrange him? What was his mouth, what his arms? What are his thighs and feet called?

brāhmaṇo'sya mukhamāsīdbāhū rājanyaḥ kṛtaḥ |
ūrū tadasya yadvaiśyaḥ padbhyāṃ śūdro ajāyata || 12 ||

The Brāhmaṇa was his mouth; his arms were made the Rājanya. His thighs became the Vaiśya; from his feet the Śūdra was born.

Note

The earliest reference to the four varṇas in Indian literature. Its date, its place within the hymn, and the social hierarchy later justified by it are subjects of long scholarly and ethical debate.

chandramā manaso jātaśchakṣoḥ sūryo ajāyata |
mukhādindraśchāgniścha prāṇādvāyurajāyata || 13 ||

The moon was born from his mind; from his eye the sun was born. From his mouth came Indra and Agni; from his breath the wind was born.

nābhyā āsīdantarikṣaṃ śīrṣṇo dyauḥ samavartata |
padbhyāṃ bhūmirdiśaḥ śrotrāttathā lokā̃ akalpayan || 14 ||

From his navel came the middle air; from his head the sky unfolded; from his feet the earth, from his ear the directions. So they fashioned the worlds.

saptāsyāsanparidhayastriḥ sapta samidhaḥ kṛtāḥ |
devā yadyajñaṃ tanvānā abadhnanpuruṣaṃ paśum || 15 ||

Seven were its enclosing sticks, thrice seven its kindling logs, when the gods, spreading out the sacrifice, bound the Person as the victim.

yajñena yajñamayajanta devāstāni dharmāṇi prathamānyāsan |
te ha nākaṃ mahimānaḥ sachanta yatra pūrve sādhyāḥ santi devāḥ || 16 ||

With sacrifice the gods sacrificed to sacrifice — these were the first ordinances. These powers reached the vault of heaven, where the ancient Sādhyas, the gods, abide.

Ṛṣi Nārāyaṇa

Late Ṛgvedic, c. 1200–1000 BCE

The Anukramaṇī, the ancient index of the Ṛgveda, names Nārāyaṇa as the seer of this hymn. Nothing more is known of him; the name later becomes one of Viṣṇu’s, and the hymn was absorbed into Vaiṣṇava worship. Its language places it in the tenth maṇḍala, the youngest layer of the Ṛgveda.

Context
A creation hymn unlike any other in the Ṛgveda: the universe is born from the sacrifice of a primordial Person, thousand-headed and thousand-eyed, who exceeds the world he becomes. From his offered body come the seasons, the animals, the Vedic verses, the social order, the moon, the sun and the directions. In household worship across Maharashtra the sixteen verses accompany the sixteen offerings of the ṣoḍaśopachāra pūjā. Verse 12 contains the earliest mention of the four varṇas; its meaning and later use have been intensely debated, and it is presented here as the text stands. The version recited in Yajurvedic practice (Taittirīya Āraṇyaka) differs slightly and adds further verses; this page follows the Ṛgveda.
