hiraṇyavarṇāṃ hariṇīṃ suvarṇarajatasrajām |
chandrāṃ hiraṇmayīṃ lakṣmīṃ jātavedo ma āvaha || 1 ||

O Jātavedas, bring to me Lakṣmī, golden of hue, the doe, wearing garlands of gold and silver, lovely as the moon, made of gold.

Agni, the sacrificial fire, is asked to bring Lakṣmī, as fire carries offerings to the gods. हरिणी, ‘doe’, is also explained as ‘golden-green’.

O Jātavedas, bring to me that Lakṣmī who never goes away, through whom I may find gold, cattle, horses and people.

Her who is bliss, gently smiling, walled in gold, tender with compassion, glowing, content and giving content, seated on the lotus, lotus-coloured: that Śrī I invoke here.

कां सोस्मितां is obscure. The translation follows the usual explanation: kām, ‘her who is bliss’, and sosmitām, ‘gently smiling’. The Kashmir manuscript edited by Scheftelowitz reads kāṃsy asmi tām.

Lovely as the moon, shining, ablaze with glory, Śrī, cherished by the gods in this world, generous: in her, the lotus-bearer, I take refuge. May my misfortune perish. I choose you.

Late Vedic, with later additions

The viniyoga recited before the hymn names three seers, Ānanda, Kardama and Chiklīta, sons of Śrī; Kardama and Chiklīta are called on by name in verses 11 and 12. The Śrī Sūkta is a khila, a hymn handed down with the Ṛgveda but outside its main collection. Scholars take its core to be late Vedic, with verses added later.

Context
The hymn to Śrī, goddess of fortune, beauty and plenty. In fifteen verses the reciter asks Agni Jātavedas to bring Lakṣmī, who never leaves, and to drive out her elder sister Alakṣmī: misfortune, hunger and want. A sixteenth verse tells how the hymn is used. In Maharashtrian pūjā its sixteen verses often accompany the sixteen offerings to Lakṣmī, as the Puruṣa Sūkta’s do for Viṣṇu. Many printed versions continue with further verses that differ from book to book; they are not given here. The hymn is chanted with Vedic accents, which this edition does not yet mark.
