sukhakartā duḥkhahartā vārtā vighnāchī | nuravī puravī prem kṛpā jayāchī |
sarvāṅgīṃ sundar uṭi śendurāchī | kaṇṭhīṃ jhaḷake māḷ muktāphaḷāñchī || 1 ||

Giver of happiness, remover of sorrow, whose grace leaves not even word of obstacles and pours out love — beautiful in every limb, smeared with sindūr paste, a garland of pearls gleaming at his throat.

jay dev jay dev jay maṅgalamūrtī |

Victory, O God, victory — victory to the embodiment of all that is auspicious! The mere sight of you fulfils the wishes of the heart.

Note

The refrain, sung after every stanza.

ratnakhachit pharā tuj gaurīkumarā | chandanāchī uṭī kuṅkumakeśarā |
hirejaḍīt mukuṭ śobhato barā | ruṇajhuṇatī nūpareṃ charaṇīṃ ghāgariyā || 2 ||

For you, son of Gaurī, a jewel-studded seat; a paste of sandal, kumkum and saffron; a diamond-set crown that suits you well; and anklets with little bells chiming at your feet.

Note

‘Pharā’ is read variously as a jewelled seat or a jewelled ornament; editions differ.

lambodar pītāmbar phaṇivarabandhanā | saraḷ soṇḍ vakratuṇḍ trinayanā |
dās rāmāchā vāṭ pāhe sadanā | saṅkaṭīṃ pāvāveṃ nirvāṇīṃ rakṣāveṃ suravaravandanā || 3 ||

Pot-bellied, dressed in yellow, a great serpent tied at your waist; trunk straight, then curving; three-eyed — the servant of Rāma waits for you at home: come to me in trouble, protect me at the last, O you whom the best of the gods revere.

Note

‘The servant of Rāma’ — Rāmdās’s signature in the final line.

Samarth Rāmdās

1608–1682 CE

Born Nārāyaṇ Ṭhosar at Jāmb, Rāmdās left home as a boy, spent twelve years in austerity at Ṭākaḷī on the Godāvarī, then twelve years travelling across India. Returning to Maharashtra he founded monasteries and Māruti temples, wrote the Dāsbodh and the Manāche Ślok, and composed several of the state’s best-loved āratīs. His teaching joined devotion to Rāma with vigorous, practical ethics. He spent his last years at Sajjangaḍ, near Sātārā.

Context
The most sung āratī in Maharashtra — the song that fills every home, every paṇḍāl and every street during Gaṇeśotsava, with cymbals, bells and clapping hands. In three stanzas Rāmdās describes Gaṇeśa as the devotee sees him in the shrine: smeared with vermilion, a pearl garland at his throat, a jewelled crown, anklets ringing — and closes with the poet waiting at home, asking to be rescued in times of trouble. The three stanzas sung everywhere are part of a longer āratī; some sources record seven stanzas under Rāmdās’s name. The evening’s āratīs always end with Ghālīn Loṭāṅgaṇ.
