ātāṃ viśvātmakeṃ deveṃ | yeṇeṃ vāgyajñeṃ toṣāveṃ |

Now may the God who is the soul of the universe be pleased by this sacrifice of words — and, pleased, grant me this gift of grace.

May the wicked leave their crookedness; may their delight in good deeds grow. May all beings come to share a friendship of the heart.

They are gardens of walking wish-fulfilling trees, living villages of wish-granting jewels, speaking oceans of nectar.

Note

Dnyāneshwar’s portrait of the saints: every image is a boon-giving thing brought to life — trees that walk, jewels that are conscious, oceans that speak.

In short: may all three worlds, made full with every happiness, worship the Primal Being without interruption.

āṇi granthopajīviye | viśeṣīṃ lokīṃ iyeṃ |

And for those in this world who live by this book especially — may they be victorious in things seen and unseen.

Note

‘Seen and unseen’ — this life and the life beyond.

yeth mhaṇe śrīviśveśarāvo | hā hoīl dānapasāvo |
yeṇeṃ vareṃ jñānadevo | sukhiyā jhālā || 9 ||

Then the Lord of the universe said, ‘This gift of grace shall be granted.’ With this boon, Dnyānadev was made happy.

Note

The ‘Lord of the universe’ is Dnyāneshwar’s guru and elder brother, Nivṛttināth.

Sant Dnyāneshwar

1275–1296 CE

Dnyāneshwar composed the Dnyāneshwarī — a Marathi commentary on the Bhagavad Gītā in some nine thousand ovīs — at Nevāsā, by tradition in 1290, when he was about fifteen. By bringing the Gītā into the spoken language of ordinary people he opened the path of the Vārkarī tradition that runs through Nāmdev, Eknāth and Tukārām. He took samādhi at Āḷandī, near Pune, at twenty-one.

Context
Having finished his commentary on the Gītā, Dnyāneshwar asks his guru — addressed as the God who is the soul of the universe — for a gift in return for this ‘sacrifice of words’. What he asks for is not for himself: that the wicked lose their crookedness, that all beings feel friendship for one another, that the darkness of sin vanish and every creature receive what it wishes for. More than seven centuries later it remains Maharashtra’s universal prayer, sung at the end of kīrtanas, in school assemblies and at gatherings of every kind.
