Vasudeva and Devakī are Kṛṣṇa’s father and mother. Kaṃsa, king of Mathurā, set his wrestler Cāṇūra against Kṛṣṇa, and Kṛṣṇa killed them both. The Garga Saṃhitā printing, the Kṛṣṇāṣṭakam and the Gītā Dhyāna read the verse word for word alike.

The verse has no known author. Wikisource names none for the popular Kṛṣṇāṣṭakam that it opens. The Kṛṣṇāṣṭakam that Wikisource and the Gita Press Nityakarma-Pūjāprakāśa credit to Śaṅkara is a different poem, beginning श्रियाश्लिष्टो विष्णुः.

Context
A salutation to Kṛṣṇa in four quarters: the son of Vasudeva, the slayer of Kaṃsa and his wrestler Cāṇūra, the joy of his mother Devakī, the teacher of the world. It is the first verse of the popular Kṛṣṇāṣṭakam, whose eight verses all end with its closing words, कृष्णं वन्दे जगद्गुरुम्. It is also one of the meditation verses that some editions print before the Bhagavad Gītā, and it stands at the head of the Mathurā Khaṇḍa of the Garga Saṃhitā, the book of Kṛṣṇa’s deeds in Mathurā.
